The journey begins before dawn. As the first light touches the rooftops of Cusco, we set out towards the towering Andes, leaving the city behind and heading into the heart of the Peruvian wilderness. A winding road leads us to Mollepata (2,900m / 9,514 ft), a charming Andean town where the crisp morning air carries the scent of eucalyptus and fresh earth. Here, we take our breakfast and a short break before continuing to the starting point of our trek.
With each step, the landscape transforms. Rolling hills give way to rugged mountain terrain, and ancient Inca irrigation channels guide us toward Soraypampa (3,900m / 12,795 ft)—the highest campsite on the Salkantay route. Nestled between towering peaks, this base camp offers stunning views of Nevado Salkantay, its icy slopes glowing under the midday sun.
After a delicious lunch, we begin the ascent to one of the most breathtaking sights in the region—Humantay Lake (4,200m / 13,779 ft). As we reach the top, the landscape opens up to reveal a lake of surreal turquoise, cradled beneath the snow-capped peaks.
As night falls, we return to Soraypampa, where our camp is ready, A perfect balance of comfort and adventure, with sturdy four-season tents tucked beneath a simple thatched shelter. As the night sky fills with countless stars, we settle in, ready for the second day that awaits.

As the first light touches the mountains, we start the day with a warm and hearty breakfast before setting out on one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of the trek. The trail gradually climbs toward the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m / 15,100 ft), the highest point of our journey.
The hike takes around 4 to 5 hours, leading us through a landscape that constantly shifts as we gain altitude. The crisp morning air fills our lungs as we follow the rugged path, surrounded by towering glaciers and rocky slopes. Reaching the pass is a true achievement. From here, a breathtaking view unfolds. The mighty Salkantay glacier stands before us, its icy slopes shining in the sunlight, while the valleys below stretch toward the Amazon basin. We take a well-deserved break, capturing photos and appreciating the sheer scale of the mountains around us.
From here, the trail begins to descend. The rocky landscape gradually fades, making way for lush greenery, small waterfalls, and the soft sound of flowing streams. After enjoying a mountainside lunch, we continue hiking for another 3 to 4 hours. As we move lower, the air becomes warmer, and colorful hummingbirds dart between the trees, welcoming us to the jungle’s edge.
By late afternoon, we arrive at our campsite, nestled where the Andes meet the jungle. As the last light fades behind the peaks, we gather for dinner, the cool mountain air mixing with the warmth of a satisfying meal resting and readying ourselves for the next day’s adventure.

After breakfast, we descend into the lush cloud forest, where the landscape changes completely. The air grows warmer, and the trail winds through coffee plantations, fruit trees, and rivers. The four-hour hike to Sahuyaco (La Playa) is a mix of gentle and downhill paths, with the sounds of tropical birds and the scent of fresh vegetation surrounding us. Here, we take a break and enjoy a hearty lunch.
In the afternoon, a short drive takes us to Santa Teresa, a small town at the edge of the jungle. This is our chance to unwind in the natural hot springs of Cocalmayo, a perfect reward after days on the trail. As the sun sets, we gather for a delicious Peruvian dinner before resting up for the next stage of our journey.

The Salkantay Trek is a year-round adventure, but the best time to hike is from April to October when the weather is drier, the trails are more stable, and the skies are clear, offering stunning mountain views. From November to March, rainfall increases, making the trails muddier but also transforming the landscape into a lush, green paradise. If you don’t mind occasional showers, this season offers fewer crowds and a more serene experience.
This trek reaches high altitudes, with the Salkantay Pass standing at 4,600 meters (15,100 feet). To avoid altitude sickness, it’s essential to acclimate in Cusco (3,400 m / 11,150 ft) for at least two days before starting the trek. Stay hydrated, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol. If needed, coca tea or altitude sickness medication can help. Consider exploring Cusco, the Sacred Valley, or Rainbow Mountain first to help your body adjust before the trek.
The Salkantay Trek takes you from snowy peaks and Mountains to humid cloud forests, so packing the right gear is crucial. Bring warm layers for the cold nights at high altitudes and light, breathable clothing for the warmer jungle sections. Waterproof gear is a must, as weather can change quickly. Comfortable trekking boots, sun protection, and insect repellent will make the journey more enjoyable. If you’re unsure about what to bring, chat with us for a detailed packing list.
The trek isn’t just about reaching Machu Picchu. Along the way, you’ll visit Llactapata, an ancient Inca site with stunning views of Machu Picchu from a unique perspective. Another highlight is the Santa Teresa hot springs, where you can soak in natural thermal waters after days of trekking. These experiences add depth to the journey, making it more than just a hike—it’s a cultural and natural immersion.
After exploring Machu Picchu, you have two return options:
Travel comfortably by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, followed by a private car to Cusco. This option offers a scenic and relaxing journey after days of trekking.
If you prefer a more adventurous finish, you can hike back to the Hydroelectric Station before taking a bus to Cusco. This is a longer route but allows you to soak in the final views of the cloud forest.
This trek is moderately challenging and suitable for hikers with a decent fitness level. While no technical skills are required, endurance and a positive mindset will make the experience more enjoyable. If you love hiking and are ready for a rewarding challenge, the Salkantay Trek is an unforgettable adventure leading to one of the greatest wonders of the world.
